Centre for Doctoral Training PhD Studentships

The University of Southampton's Institute for Complex Systems Simulation brings together world-class simulation modelling research activities from across the University of Southampton and hosts Southampton's Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Complex Systems Simulation, running a doctoral training programme that is the first of its kind in the UK.

Studentships
There are 10 fully funded 4-year EPSRC PhD studentships available every year. We expect to admit a cohort of at least 20 students per year. Applications for October 2010 are invited now.

The doctoral programme is four years in length, comprising a one-year taught component followed by a three-year research component, pursuing a research project that is chosen or even defined by the student themselves. The ten EPSRC studentships cover tuition fees and an enhanced maintenance grant of £16K per year, and are available to the best UK applicants. If you wish to be considered for the award of a studentship, please make this clear on your application (see below).

An EU student may also qualify for one of these studentships if they satisfy both of the following UK Government rules:
- you will have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the three years immediately prior to the start of your doctoral studies;
- you have a relevant connection with the UK.

For other EU students, EPSRC funding can only be used to cover your tuition fees. An alternative source of funding must be found to cover your living costs.

The Institute will recruit graduates from a wide array of backgrounds spanning numerate disciplines, i.e., from across engineering, computing, biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, geography and mathematics plus, where appropriate, the quantitative social sciences (e.g., economics). Our intake will be theory-minded, math-literate and computer-literate, but in other respects we expect there to be considerable diversity -- indeed we think this variety is an important asset. A first year of carefully organised taught training is designed to allow this diverse intake to learn from and support each other while they are taught to develop the key skills and knowledge that will allow them to pursue subsequent research.

Applicants will be judged on their enthusiasm and academic quality, their existing skills and their potential for contributing to the Institute. As part of any application, we will expect a research statement that clearly articulates an appreciation of complex systems simulation in addition to a CV demonstrating excellent academic attainment, and strong references. Where an otherwise extremely strong applicant has had limited formal exposure to programming, their admission will certainly be possible, but may be made conditional on attending and passing an intensive programming primer course which will be held immediately before the start of the doctoral programme.
